Manager Thoughts

Ahead of the visit of Pontypridd Reds Manager Rhys Thomas reflected on the last meeting between the sides,

“We produced a very strong performance the last time we faced Pontypridd, and that’s the level we’ll be aiming to reach again on Sunday.

“The focus is on improving things from our previous performance.

“We are looking to bring a lot of intensity and quality to the game Sunday in order to build some momentum after a couple of tough results.”

Pontypridd sit at the bottom of the Adran Premier table, but Thomas is aware of the quality they have saying,

“Although Pontypridd are at the lower end of the table, we know they’re capable of causing problems.

“They have players who can punish mistakes, so we’ll be approaching the game with full respect for the opposition.

“It’s important we impose our style early and stay consistent across the ninety minutes to get a positive result.”

Ferry Flashback:

October 27th, 2019, and a Welsh Women’s Premier League game against Pontypridd (Then Cyncoed) ended in a 2-2 draw at Old Road.

Ela Roberts gave the Reds the lead in the 30th minute in round four of the season.  Alison Witts would equalise for Pontypridd in the 42nd minute years before she would be scoring for fun for the Reds.  Ponty’s revival would last just a minute as Sophie Topper would put Ferry ahead again.  On the hour mark Witts would add her second to ensure the sides shared the points.

Six players from the current Ferry squad started that match Ela Roberts, who was on the scoresheet, Courtney Young, Georgia Howells, Lowri Ridings, Lucy Powell and Meg Kearle all starting.

The Reds finished the season in sixth place with the season being cut short due to Covid lockdowns.

Opposition Focus:

After gaining promotion at the first attempt last season Pontypridd have struggled on their return to the Adran Premier.  The Dragons are the only side in the league without a point and sit bottom six points adrift of Barry Town.

The Reds faced Ponty back in September at USW Sports Park picking up a 4-0 win.  Despite large spells of pressure from the Reds Ponty were able to go into halftime at 0-0.

They were unable to hold off the waves of Ferry attacks and five minutes into the second half Lowri Ridings put the Reds ahead.  Jade Crofts added a second before Maia Owen added the third.  The win was rounded off by Casey Daniels who scored her first goal for the Reds.

Since then Ponty have lost 6-1 to both Wrexham and The New Saints.  They were close to a first win against Barry Town Lili Angove and Madison Lloyd putting them two up at Jenner Park.  It wasn’t to be for the Dragons as Barry staged the comeback of the season.  Beca Thomas scoring in the 88th and 89th minute before a 94th minute winner from Millie Breen.  Two more heavy defeats have followed as Ponty lost to Swansea 10-1 and Cardiff City 7-1.

Despite the teams poor run Madison Lloyd has scored an impressive three goals in her last four games.  Lloyd who signed for Ponty in the summer for the season from Adran Premier champions Cardiff City clearly benefiting from the extra game time at Ponty.

History is on the side of the visitors who have four wins compared to Ferry’s two.  Ferry though have won the last two league meetings between the sides and will be looking to make it three on Sunday.
