Match Report: Briton Ferry Llansawel 3-2 Cwmbran Celtic

Late Payne for Cwmbran Celtic

Briton Ferry Llansawel are though to the quarter final of the Adran Trophy after a 3-2 win over Cwmbran Celtic. 


In some horrible conditions at The Renewable Centre Stadium Ferry were forced in a battle against a Cwmbran Celtic side.  A thrilling contest saw five goals and two missed penalties as both teams gave their all for the win. 


Meg Kearle put the Reds in front after 12 minutes but they pegged back after 30 minutes, Cerys Shipley scoring for the visitors.  Meg Kearle restored the lead just a minute after and Fiona Anthony missed from the spot just before half time. 


Cwmbran began the second half well and were back level after 52 minutes with Cerys Pinchard getting the goal.  The Reds had to dig deep and were awarded a penalty in the final minute.  Lucy Powell smashing the ball off the crossbar.  As it looked like the game who go to a shootout Lauren Payne won it for the Reds with a dramatic late winner. 

The Reds took an early lead after a good passing move allowed Ela Roberts and Maia Owen to link up down the left.  Owen then made a run into the box and put the ball across goal.  Meg Kearle was first to it and although her initial effort was saved she turned in the rebound.

Maia Owen was fouled making a run into the box from the left giving the Reds a free kick.  Meg Kearle sent the free kick into the side netting.


Kearle went close to a second when her shot was deflected towards the top corner but Cwmbran keeper produced a strong hand to save.


After a spell of pressure in the box from Ferry the ball was cleared out to Jess Denscombe who hit the ball at goal narrowly missing the target.


Crofts then forced a save from the keeper with a low drive, Aimee Preston-Roberts saving with her feet.


The visitors then levelled though Cerys Shipley who turned in from close range.


Ferry went straight back on the attack and were back in front a minute later.  Laura-May Walkley-Witts sending Kearle away and Kearle rounded the keeper and slotted home.


Walkley-Witts fed the ball into the run of Jade Crofts who lined up a shot but a last ditch tackle prevented her.  From the resulting corner Ferry had the ball in the net Maia Owen turning in on the line but the flag was up for offside.


Celtic had the chance to level again when Olivia Kett-White handled the ball in the area.  Fiona Anthony took the penalty but sent it high over the bar.

Cwmbran Celtic won an early corner which was sent into the box but cleared by Walkley-Witts and Maia Owen.


Fiona Anthony tried to chip the ball over Courtney Young but the Ferry keeper claimed the ball. 

The visitors then had a free kick on the edge of the box. Cerys Pinchard shot though a crowded box and with a defection equalised for Celtic.

Maia Owen then saw her goal disallowed as she was adjudged to have fouled the keeper.  Owen racing on to a though ball from Walkley-Witts. 


Meg Kearle sent a great cross field pass though to Owen, who had a made a clever run.  Owen hit a first time shot but it went wide.


Kearle was fouled as Ferry tried to build an attack and from the free kick Kearle went for goal but it was straight at the keeper.


Lucy Powell was brought on and she had the chance to put ahead from a free kick. Powell curling the ball into the side netting. 


As Ferry pushed to avoid the game going to penalties Walkley-Witts was put though into the box.  She was brough down and the ref gave the Reds a penalty.  Lucy Powell stepped up and stuck the ball onto the crossbar. 


As it started to look like the Red wouldn’t find the winning goal they pushed forward and threw everything at Cwmbran.  In added time the breakthrough finally came.  Playing some quick passes around the Celtic defence the ball came to Lauren Payne who managed to slide the ball past the keeper.
