Briton Ferry 5-2 Caldicot Town: Five Star Reds take opening day win

The Reds opened the season at Old Road with a 5-2 victory over Caldicot Town. The Reds had to come from behind after going a goal down.


The early minutes of the game were even but as the game progressed Ferry were able to take control as the half wore on. After the opening minutes the Red’s pressed the Caldicot defence and were able to create more chances.


The second half saw Ferry dominate the game and Caldicot pushed back and restricted to counter attacks. The Reds were passing the ball around and stretching the Caldicot team as they found space and created many good chances, keeping the Caldicot keeper busy.


Ashleigh Harris gave the visitors the lead from the spot after eight minutes. Laura-May Walkley levelled after 20 minutes. Mollie Jones gave Ferry the lead after 25 minutes and added a third on 45 minutes. Lucy Powell added a fourth on 54 minutes with Walkley getting her second on 63 minutes. Sarah Sprintall got a second for Caldicot in added time.


A quick break from Caldicot saw Hannah Phillips get behind the defence and make her way into the box. Brooke Llewellyn brough her down and the ref pointed to the spot. Ashleigh Harris stepped up and put the penalty into the corner.


Ferry tried to get back into the game and Mollie Jones shot over the bar from inside the box after good play from Chelsea Deacon on the left.


Laura-May Walkley tried to get the side back into the game, but her snapshot went over the bar.

Walkley soon did get the Reds level as she equalised on 20 minutes. Ella Roberts made her way to the outside of the box on the right and played the ball into Walkley who was free inside. Walkley calmly put the ball past the keeper to level the game.


Soon after Ferry started to take control of the game and took the lead. Megan Kearle getting the better of Caldicot’s offside trap and breaking down the right. Kearle put the ball across goal for Mollie Jones to tap home.


Lucy Powell almost found the net direct from a corner. Swinging the ball into the near post it went under the keeper and hit the post before the ball was cleared.


Just as the half was ending a good ball over the top found the run of Mollie Jones. Jones poked the ball under the keeper to make the score 3-1.

Ferry started the second half better pushing the Caldicot defence back. Taking the game to their visitors the home side looked to get the ball into the box and create chances. Caldicot looked to catch Ferry on the break with long balls over the top, but Courtney Young was alert to the danger.

The pressure from the Reds soon told and Lucy Powell made it 4-1. A stunning shot from 40 yards out leaving the keeper no chance.


A though ball found Mollie Jones, on a hat trick run towards the box. The Caldicot keeper came out and save Jones’ shot from the edge of the box.


Alice Broadley tried her luck from out and the left and went for goal. The ball rattled the top of the bar and denied what would have a superb goal.


Soon after Broadley was forward again and went for goal this time with a low shot from outside the box. The keeper got down well to save.


Chelsey Deacon with some good play down the left found Laura-May Walkley in the box. Walkley took the ball around the keeper and slotted in Ferry’s fifth.


Walkley tried for her hat trick but her shot from the edge of the box was straight at the keeper.

Walkley’s well timed pass found Deacon on the left. Deacon cut inside and shot but it was too close to the keeper and easily saved.


Chelsea Deacon put a teasing ball into the box for Walkley, who took a shot on the turn and forced a decent save from the keeper.


Beating the offside Jessica Curran saw her effort go very close. After breaking towards the box Curran moved the ball to her right foot and her low shot went just past the outside of the post.


Jess Denscombe soon after broke free but the Caldicot Keeper was out quickly to stop her effort.

Caldicot were able to get a second goal in added time as Sarah Sprintall headed in from a corner.
