Briton Ferry Llansawel 4-0 Pontardawe Town: Derby Day Delight for Reds

Briton Ferry kept their Adran South title challenge going with a 4-0 win over rivals Pontardawe Town. The win pulls the Reds five points clear of Cascade at the top of the table.


The Reds started well and tried to push Ponty back and had the best of the early chances. Ponty were looking to contain and counter and were quick when they tried to break, looking to exploit the space when The Reds full backs pushed forward. Ponty came into the game more as the first half went on. Lowri Ridings gave the Reds the lead in the 39th minute. A well-played move saw Lowri Baker finish to make it 2-0.


Ponty didn’t let their heads drop when they came out for the second half and fought hard for every ball. The Reds had to dig deep to make chances as their opponents didn’t allow then an easy time. Ferry got the third goal after 65 minutes as Megan Kearle finished a off a good move. Lowri Ridings added a fourth in added time for the Reds who pick up a good win.


An early chance came from a Megan Kearle corner, Lexi Clayton heading down at the back post, but her header was blocked.


Another good chance came when Laura-May Walkley slid the ball though for Megan Kearle. Kearle went to put the ball in at the near post but found the side netting.


Ferry continued the pressure and Walkley saw her effort saved before Chelsea Deacon’s follow up was cleared off the line.


Another though ball from Walkley found Deacon in the box. Her shot was saved and then Lowri Baker hit wide.


Walkley was involved again as she sent Lowri Baker away down the right. Baker hit a cross across goal, but Connolly cut it out.


Ponty almost had the lead when Sophie Carly had a chance from close range. Carly hit her shot too close to Young who made a good save.


Walkley tired from the edge of the box but her shot was straight at the keeper.


Lucy Powell was found in the box in space and a great chance to score but she blazed her shot over the bar.


Megan Kearle made a run behind and was found but her shot from a tight angle was saved.

The breakthrough came for the Reds in the 39th minute when Lowri Ridings headed in from Megan Kearle’s corner. Ridings rising above the defenders with a powerful header past the keeper.


Ferry kept the pressure on and worked the ball across the pitch. Walkley with a pass out to Baker slicing the Pontardawe defence apart to find Baker. After a taking a touch Baker finished coolly into the bottom corner.

Walkley picked up the ball in the middle and made a run forward into the space. She sent the ball out wide to Baker who had made a good run into space. Baker went for goal but put her effort over the bar.


Catryn Cook took a free kick for the visitors as they looked to get back into the game. She tried to put the ball into the box, but it run straight to Young.


Ferry came back on the attack and Lowri Baker had a chance from the right. Her low shot was saved by Connolly.


Lowri Ridings had a chance for a second when she headed over from a Ferry corner.


Walkley won a free kick on the edge of the box which Megan Kearle took. She went for goal but it was too close to the keeper who had an easy catch.


Walkley again found Baker free on the left and she cut inside and went for goal. Connolly however made a decent save to deny her.


Lucy Powell played the ball out to the left for Baker who was again in space. Baker made her way to the by-line and sent the ball across goal where Megan Kearle had made a run to tap in.


Lowri Ridings had another chance after the ball fell to her following a scramble in the box. Ridings though fired over the bar from close range.


Ela Roberts sent Jess Denscombe away down the right and Denscombe had a shot at goal. Her effort from out wide was saved.


Lowri Ridings got a fourth goal for the Reds when she headed in from Lucy Powell's corner.
